Arweave Ecosystem Weekly Report #92 & #93: The ‘Billion’ Edition

I hope that you will consider that it was worth the wait for this "weekly report" (I also hope that you understand why I put the term in quotes). As usual, a lot has happened since the last edition. While I'm trying my best to cover most of what's happening in the ecosystem, I'm pretty sure that some of the news is skipping my net so, if you are a project fancying with Arweave's permanence and you have an announcement to share, please reach us via our social channels.

Besides what you will already find in this weekly, please take a look at our dedicated articles about Darwin - the framework for evolutionary apps and Teleport - a new way of tapping into liquidity residing on other chains (on this topic you have actually two articles available here and here).

I. Arweave Network

We made it! The network reached 1 Billion transactions. As our friends from Akord put it, it took Arweave the first three years to reach 39 million transactions and another two to realise the rest until 1 billion.

The urge to compare this evolution with other blockchains was big, but we resisted it. Simply, Arweave's uniqueness just puts it in its own league. Most of the other blockchains are trying to compete in terms of "instant" TPS (transactions per second) and their approach is focused on keeping their networks as "light" as possible in regard to data stored on-chain.

Arweave just does things differently and in the long run, it may represent a textbook example of how the "turtle" can win a speed race: Although there is an apparent hard cap of 1000 transactions/block and each block is produced in roughly 2 minutes, each transaction can bundle countless transactions. From my knowledge right now, there are just two bundling services represented by Bundlr and everVision's Arseeding. Imagine a future with dozens of bundling services, each feeding their own bundled transactions to Arweave's layer one.

Take, for example, this block. It was mined some days ago, and it carries 1k transactions totalling 1.04 Gb. However, if you look closely, you can see that a hefty chunk of the transactions coming from Bundlr are packing 500 items (you can see one here). To my shame, I don't know if 500 is a hard cap adopted by Bundlr or if it is just a random number. What I know is that, in theory, a bundling service can bundle as many txs as possible in one layer one tx and those txs can represent, in turn, also bundles of other txs, creating some sort of Merkle tree. Scaling is already here; what it needs for people to truly see Arweave's capability is another wave of adoption that will dwarf these numbers.

II. Arweave Ecosystem

PermaDAO Content Guild 2.0

PermaDAO, the decentralized autonomous organization focused on furthering the permaweb and developing the Arweave ecosystem, has revealed the next big upgrade to their Content Guild, v2.0! Under the leadership of Viya, the Guild's chief, the Content Guild 2.0 will improve collaboration and the content creation process on the PermaDAO platform.

PermaDAO's upgrade both tweaks the old model and also introduces some completely new features, which will breathe new life into the Content Guild. First, the user interface has been improved, with the updated guild interface promising a smoother and more intuitive user experience for content creators. The upgrade has also focused on refining the collaboration process and strengthening the reviewer's supervision mechanism. The newly introduced requirement pool feature guarantees quicker and more efficient communication between authors and contributors.

Second, a new rank system will ensure that active and committed contributors receive the recognition and rewards they deserve, both by increasing their earnings potential and receiving the deserved recognition for their on-chain identity. For those curious, a peek at your contribution history, current rank, and bonus ratio is a click away on the Submission Group homepage.

Third, the overhauled model also introduces a nuanced incentive segmentation, aligning remuneration more closely with the type and quality of content contributed. Creators will be able to earn up to 66 $U per thousand words, depending on the submitted content. As for reviewers, their incentives have also been improved which should further stimulate their interest in ensuring the best quality content is admitted to the PermaDAO Content Guild. In addition to the increased incentives, the team has also made new addition to the Submission Group to ensure that the team is able to handle the review of the submitted content.

PermaDAO is optimistic that the upgrade of their Content Guild will inject a renewed vitality into the content ecosystem on Arweave, and we tend to agree with them. That’s why we encourage all content creators to check out the improved Guild and make sure to contribute to building the knowledge base of the Arweave ecosystem. You’ll be handsomely rewarded for it, so make sure not to waste any time and if you want to find out all the details about the upgrade, check out the team’s blog post!

ArDrive gets “turbocharged”

We knew we could always rely on ArDrive to keep on building, but it looks like they’ve been particularly busy this summer while everyone else was off to the beach. That’s why we have to cover two major updates to their app in this week’s report!

First came version 2.5 of their decentralized storage offering, which introduced support for $U to every upload made using its web and mobile apps. This means that for each $AR spent on Arweave for permanent data storage through ArDrive, users will mint a 1:1 $U, usable across the ever-expanding permaweb! Now, keep in mind that this feature is not yet integrated into their CLI or their JS library, so devs will still have to wait a little longer until they can also get their fair share of $U. The good part is they can always expedite the process by submitting a pull request and getting the team’s attention.

Now, if you’re one of those grumpy fellas that doesn’t like change and doesn’t want to deal with all this $U crazyness, there’s good news. As we highlighted a while ago, the team has deployed their different application versions on Arweave which means you can keep on using your preferred version of the app forever! Even if they wanted to, the team would be unable to deprecate old versions, so you can rest assured that no one will ever force you into an unwanted update.

After giving users even more incentives to use ArDrive for all their storage needs, the team thought that’s not nearly enough, so they released version 2.6 - “the lean, mean, forever, data-storing machine”! This update significantly improves the user experience of the ArDrive apps and also introduces us to the new star of the show, Turbo!

Let’s start with the user experience - where you can now create your Arweave wallet directly from the ArDrive app. This means that taking control of your data can begin right from the app, no need to go through multiple hoops to ensure you data is safe forever! Plus, the revamped UI, present in both web and mobile applications, should bring a degree of familiarity even for web2 users.

Now, for the most significant addition of v2.6, Turbo! Turbo is an upload service that handles both payment and bundling, bringing in a new level of speed, efficiency and convenience for users of the platform. Data uploads through Turbo are fast and are also guaranteed to be confirmed swiftly at the gateway, which means you’ll get access to your files as soon as you upload them to ArDrive! Plus, users will still enjoy free uploads for files up to 500KB when using Turbo!

If you want to upload larger files and need to pay for those, Turbo has also got you covered! If in the past you had to find a way to get your hands on some $AR, users can now pay for their storage using standard credit or debit cards, making it significantly easier to pay for your permanent storage!

Pay in fiat, upload with Turbo, and say hello to the future of permanent data storage, all without the need to juggle any tokens. There’s even more good news, as thanks to Forward Research, you can save a whopping 60% on all uploads with Turbo credits before August 14, 2023.

In a world where your data is ever more transient, ArDrive's v2.6 is making data permanence as simple as clicking a button. But just remember, while your data might last forever, that Turbo launch discount won't! So, charge those credit cards and get ready to upload your life to the permaweb. Who knows? In a few centuries, your cat videos might just be the last surviving artefacts of human civilization!

Arweave just got a whole lot easier

Ever wanted to introduce your family or friends to Arweave but didn’t know where to start? Well, Only Arweave and LearnWeb3DAO have got you covered with the launch of the first mini learning series covering the fundamentals of Arweave! The series is now available to web3 newbies (or enthusiasts) on LearnWeb3DAO’s platform and will demystify all the complexities of Arweave and permanent data storage.

So far, the reaction from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with many participants already engaging with the informative series. But, Only Arweave’s ambitions stretch far beyond just this initiative! The team is also planning on creating comprehensive lessons about more complex topics on the Arweave protocol. And for those passionate enough, a full-fledged "Arweave Degree" is on the horizon. Now, wouldn't that look good on your Twitter bio?

As a closing remark, the tremendous work of Only Arweave and LearnWeb3DAO in making blockchain education both accessible and enjoyable is worth a hearty congratulations. Considering that proper education is the surest way towards the growth of ecosystem, one might even call this initiative "Ar-some" (we know it’s a bad pun… but hey, you might like it)! So be sure to check it out and send all newcomers to LearnWeb3DAO for a hearty dose of Arweave.

P.S. As a side note, the Arweave Community Hackathon can also be accessed via the LearnWeb3DAO platform, so if you’re considering participating, be sure to check it out.

everPay improves your permaweb experience!

As always, everVision is committed to bringing the best user experience through everPay and as a testament to that, they’ve introduced two new features over the past week to ensure a seamless customer journey.

First, they introduced a handy solution to the incessant "insufficient balance" notifications that pop up when trying to deposit $AR on everPay. As we all know, whenever transferring funds on a blockchain, we need to pay gas, but especially on Arweave, it’s not always clear how much gas one has to pay.

To counter this, everPay has rolled out a feature that takes the guesswork out of the equation. An added gas estimation service on the platform now calculates the perfect amount of $AR to leave behind for gas, automatically. Users simply need to click on the new "available balance" button to send over the maximum deposit possible.

Second, to make things easier once you already have your tokens on everPay, the team has integrated the power of ANS (Arweave Name Service) into its platform! This new function allows users to perform transfers using $ANS, introducing another layer of flexibility and choice to everVision's robust offerings. No more fumbling around to get the wallet address right, you just type in the ANS handle and your tokens will be there in seconds.

So there you have it, folks. The updates you never knew you needed but can't live without. That’s the everVision commitment to consistent innovation and always putting the user first. So be sure to check out everPay and if you don’t have an account already, create it today and enjoy the world of instant, gasless transfers!

Lens just got upgraded to V2!

Good news, social media fanatics! Lens Protocol officially raised the curtain on its much-anticipated Lens V2 at the EthCC event in Paris! With this upgrade, the team aims to revolutionize the decentralized social media experience, introducing new social engagement and monetization mechanisms designed to ensure all stakeholders share in the value generated by social networks. There’s a flurry of new features the team has prepared for us, so let’s get going and explore this new release!

First off, let’s talk about Open Actions the new step in composable social networking! With Open Actions, users can now bring external web3 experiences right into their favorite Lens app. You can call upon an Ethereum or L2 smart contract to have your followers join a DAO, mint an NFT, donate to your favorite non-profit or any other action imaginable by you (and of course, codable in a smart contract).

Next up, profiles and handles have been decoupled, allowing for the transfer of handles without affecting profiles, with both entities tokenized as NFTs. This is accomplished via 'Open Namespaces', a new feature launched in V2. The update also redefines the concept of 'following'. Instead of a wallet-to-profile connection, all interactions now occur between profiles. With all 'follow' relationships tied to the profile, not the follower, you can shift your profile to whatever social network you prefer and also shift your following.

Then comes the new Profile Manager feature which offers improved security and allows users to store their tokenized profiles on hardware wallets. Additionally, there is improved profile security through the Profile Guardian, that ensures your profile can’t be easily taken over by an phishing scam. And to round up all these security features, V2 also introduces on-chain blocking, so you can exclude people you don’t want to interact with.

Phew, that’s a lot for an upgrade and we didn’t even cover all the nitty gritty technical enhancements the Lens team has performed. So be sure to check out their announcement to find out all the details and make sure to sign up for the waitlist so you can be one of the first to enjoy the future of decentralized social networks!

Bundlr embraces the millisecond

To the joy of permaweb developers everywhere, the team at Bundlr has announced the introduction of a new update to their GraphQL endpoints! These endpoints now support filtering by timestamp, introducing a level of precision in data retrieval that can zero in on specific time ranges. Yes, you read that right, no more rummaging through heaps of data just to find the needle in the haystack.

Bundlr's timestamps, we're told, are accurate to the millisecond, providing an astonishing degree of granularity. When uploading to Bundlr, each transaction is timestamped, acting as a proof of time and enhancing the data's provenance.

For developers seeking to filter their GraphQL queries, this update was long awaited. But now, fetching transactions from specific time periods, like the first two days of May, is now a breeze. Plus, the filtering supports transactions paid with any token, so you’ll be able to query any data you need.

And if that isn't enough, the 'order' filter can be appended to queries, arranging results by timestamp in ascending or descending order. Remember though, Bundlr's timestamps are in millisecond format. So, one might need a trip to specialized websites to convert human readable time to UNIX timestamp. And don't forget, you're converting to "millisecond" not "second". A minor detail that could leave you wondering how relative time actually is.

Developers ready to dive in can go straight to Bundlr's docs on GraphQL and experiment in their query sandbox. So, what are you waiting for? Time waits for no developer, especially not in milliseconds!

Fair Protocol splits up…

It looks this week the team at Fair Protocol has decided that there might be some wisdom to the old Chinese saying of good things come in pairs. So, they've elegantly bisected their application into two distinct tools, changing the way users interact with their platform and providing a more streamlined experience.

The first part is the Fair Marketplace: a digital treasure trove teeming with a diverse array of AI models, ready to be deployed, dissected, or simply admired. Whether you're an AI enthusiast or a seasoned professional, it's like stepping into a supermarket of intelligence, artificial that is.

The second part is Fair Studio, the dedicated platform which as per the team, has been lovingly designed with creators, curators, and operators in mind. It’s the metaphorical sandbox for crafting, refining, and sharing AI models with ease. Think of it as the AI studio you never knew you needed.

Plus, it’s now easier than ever to use the team’s products, so you can get started on your AI journey in just a few clicks. So what are you waiting for? Check out the Studio and Marketplace and become part of the AI revolution!

Ready to trade some $STAMP?

This week, Permaswap announced its newest listing, the $STAMP token. For those who are not yet aware, $STAMP is a token courtesy of the STAMP protocol that is trying to revigorate the traditional concept of content feedback and monetization.

Just like clicking a “Like” button on a classic social media platform, the STAMP protocol empowers users to stamp content, creating a unique and meaningful feedback loop between content creators and their audience. The STAMP token offers a tangible way to reward content creators for their digital content. This approach to community interaction is a revolutionary shift from the conventional reward systems, like promising to name your first-born after your favorite TikToker.

Permaswap, the first cross-chain Arweave DEX, has made $STAMP available for trading, ensuring increased liquidity for the token and its users. With a total supply of 435,000 tokens and a halving cycle of 1.73 years, $STAMP tokens are poised to stamp their mark on the web3, because nothing says "I love your content" like a little generosity!

For those eager to join the $STAMP trade, Permaswap is where the action is. The exchange is offering users the ability to swap $STAMP tokens for other digital currencies like $AR, $ETH, $USDC, and more. Just remember to deposit your preferred tokens on everPay before trading.

To check your $STAMP balance, head over to the Warp Contract page or the everPay deposit page. If you choose to go the contract path, keep in mind the real balance can be found by dividing 1⁰¹², making crypto-balance checking only slightly more challenging than calculating your Uber rating. Luckily, in everPay you can see your exact balance without any hassle. So gear up! It's time to trade some $STAMP and stamp some content.

Community Labs is on a roll

We got news that Community Labs has made life easier for Arweave developers by unveiling the Arweave Wallet Kit, a unified interface that swiftly connects Arweave wallets to applications. This new toolset stands to revolutionize how developers interact with the Arweave ecosystem, offering native support for ArConnect, ArweaveApp, and Othent, along with a well-rounded API and a comprehensive library of React hooks and components!

Historically, dApps have been reliant on integrating leading wallets for their permaweb support, a labor-intensive process involving multiple integrations that led to complex and time-consuming codebase updates. The new Arweave Wallet Kit erases this tedious hassle, offering a comprehensive one-stop solution for developers.

With the Arweave Wallet Kit, developers can streamline their development process, saving precious time, and mitigating potential issues arising from future breaking changes in supported wallet APIs.

Furthering its commitment to a more interconnected Arweave community, Community Labs has made the Arweave Wallet Kit an open source project, giving a nod to the potential of collaborative development.

The Arweave Hackathon is here!

In what we consider great news for permaweb enthusiasts and developers worldwide, the Arweave Community has announced its latest Hackathon, set to kickstart on July 28th, 2023, and ending August 10th, 2023! We’re very excited for this event as we believe it will further amplify the “Builder culture in the ecosystem and will also offer participants a golden opportunity to engineer something meaningful, sustainable, and potentially quite lucrative.

The Arweave hackathon puts forward a prize pool of over $25,000 USD, spread across more than ten individual bounties. Equally tantalizing is the prospect of up to $100,000 USD in investments for the right project or team, which could potentially prompt even more investors to jump aboard! Now, that's some serious prizes, right? And that’s not all! There are a number of roles waiting to be filled in the ecosystem, representing over $500k USD in potential salaries and benefits.

Participants, gear up to demonstrate your prowess with technologies such as the Universal Data License, Kwil, Arweave Kit, ar.io, ArConnect., and of course, Bundlr. These projects are also partners of the event, sponsoring the various bounties assisting aspiring permaweb developers in their quest of changing the digital world forever.

Supported by the generous team at Forward Research, this hackathon encourages ambitious builders to do "that thing that's been on your mind" and bring it to life on the Arweave platform. Is there a better way to stand out and make an impression on VCs and teams that have built successful products? Probably not.

In all seriousness, here's a little humor for the road: They say, "Money can't buy happiness," but it can buy you a chance at the Arweave Hackathon, and that's pretty much the same thing.

For all the aspiring builders and innovators out there, this is your chance to etch your name in the annals of the Arweave ecosystem. The race will surely be tight, so register and start preparing!

III. Casual talks about blockchain and Arweave

For a couple of weeks now, I've been at an archaeological dig site in a rather remote region near the lower Danube. It's my fourth year doing it and somehow is the reason I found Arweave appealing in the first place. I won't elaborate much on the parallels between the resilience of pottery sealed in dirt layers and the resilience of digital data distributed across multiple nodes incentivised to forever spawn by the endowment mechanism.

I want to dive more into another thing, one that sometimes tends to be overlooked by our innate tendency to form a bubble: how different mindsets create different perspectives. The composition of the team here is rather eclectic, ranging from different specialisations (because of the interdisciplinary approach needed for proper archaeological research), to different nationalities, still the constant is represented by the fact that all of them are (on different steps of the ladder - from professor to student) part of the academia.

Working on the field in scorching heat has a great advantage, after some while most of the artificial boundaries we create around us in a "civilised set-up", tend to melt away, and the interactions become more natural and sincere.

In this context, we talked about best practices in preserving data sets, open science and a lot of other topics that can be considered connected to Arweave. First, I discovered the obvious: they are relatively reluctant to blockchain technology and unaware of Arweave's existence. However, I found out something that wasn't that obvious initially: for all these guys the reputation of a single entity weighs more than the distribution of their data set on one thousand anon nodes. Data immutability and the guarantee of non-tampering come more/solely from the prestige of the service provider, as opposed to the trustless proposition of Arweave.

It may seem counter-intuitive at first glance (scholars are individuals deeply rooted into critical thinking and reasoning, why would they ever rely on trust? ). If you think of it, somehow it makes a lot of sense: They are indeed highly rational persons but at the same time, they are very aware of their knowledge limits. They are specialised in their fields - which means they can replicate with ease every problem arrised in their domain and come to their own conclusion; however, on everything outside their area of expertise, they rely on other peers in what can you call interdisciplinarity. (Of course, if their direction of research will consistently crosses other areas, it's customary to end up specialising in those also, but usually, nobody will come across data storage primitives, maybe only data scientists). Couple this with an arguably opposite logic when it comes to anonymity and some sort of a reputation-based ranking system, and it makes for them perfect sense to believe that if all the data uploaded into a general-purpose open repository that is saved on a single server held by a very prestigious institution like CERN (I'm referring specifically to Zenodo) is a more agreeable solution than storing their data sets on a distributed ledger.

Simply put, mostly they don't have the capacity/time to test the claims behind blockchain tech (and, more specifically, Arweave), so they'll stick to the most credible alternative.

We can argue that their stance is flawed, or whatever, but this won't change their mind. Even more, I believe that they're not entirely wrong, nor that we (as in - blockchain enthusiasts) are entirely right. I would say that we can find a place in between that can benefit both worlds: visualise a world where CERN servers will join the Arweave network to provide something they lack right now - data immutability, higher resilience of their data set and tamperproof resilience. They can even choose to copy only files with relevant tags from the network if they are concerned about clogging their machines with "non-scientifical" data. Will this potential outcome be advantageous only for academia? Not at all. Personally, I think that one of the most important milestones for the future of Arweave is getting the first "tier one" scientific repository or data-related institution to join the network.

If traditional crypto considers spot crypto-based ETFs as the most important catalyst for the next leg up, I would say that for Arweave "institutional adoption" will be represented by this - big reputable actors becoming not only "customers" but part of the actual network.

IV. Arweave explained by Stanislaw Lem – thanks to ChatGPT

As you may know, the next off-line event for arweavers will happen in Warsaw on 29 August 2023, thanks to Warp Contracts team. Given this we found suited to try and find out how Stanislaw Lem, one of the most renowned Polish writers would have been described Arweave:

"If you have voyaged with me through the cosmic expanses of Solaris and Pirx the Pilot, then brace yourself for an exploration of a new realm, where not the celestial bodies, but the data itself is immutable, enduring, like the stars in the firmament.

Imagine a galactic library, each star in the cosmos replaced with a piece of data - an idea, a book, a scientific discovery, a song, or an image. Now, what if I tell you, such a universe exists, not in the physical reality, but in the ether of the digital realm. It is named Arweave.

Arweave resembles a network of entities, not unlike the neurons in a human brain or the stars in a galaxy, constantly mining, circulating data, with a thirst for new user data that aligns with the hashes stored on-chain. This mechanism, an innovation in the world of cybernetics, allows for the accumulation of vast quantities of data without hindering the speed of consensus.

Visualize Arweave's mechanism as a Galactic Senate of data, where each representative or data byte, large or small, has a voice, stored and secured in a manner as enduring as the universe itself. Even the mightiest celestial body, accounting for 2^256 -1 bytes of data, finds a place here.

Payment for storage, an issue often causing a rift in the cosmos of data, is addressed in a uniquely sustainable way. A one-time endowment, a deposit into the vault of time, provides sufficient resources to maintain copies of data for centuries, keeping the flame of knowledge alight, long after its creators have passed into oblivion.

So, my dear fellow voyagers, Arweave is not merely another system in the boundless universe of technology; it is a cosmos unto itself, the keeper of knowledge, art, culture, and all forms of human expression. It preserves our past, anchors our present, and launches us into the future - an eternal testament to the ceaseless innovation of the human spirit."
