Arweave Ecosystem Weekly Report #55: The ‘STAMP Frenzy’ Edition

While decent.land offered the first holistic view on what they are brewing, WeaveDB showed to the entire crypto space how a dApp can be Web3 native and user friendly, and the atomic STAMP frenzy has just began.

I. Arweave Network

If one accesses version one of Viewblock, one will see that the current node count is around 60. This figure could be considered disappointing by some. The thing about it is that it doesn’t actually show the real count of nodes because it takes into consideration each pool of miners only as one node. Viewblock addressed the issue, and now, in its second iteration, it has a dedicated view called “Estimated Modes per Pool“. This is no news for many of you, so why bring it up again? Well, take a look at the image above. The estimated nodes from HPool doubled in number about 10 days ago, showing a peak of 215 nodes on 8 September and then stabilising at around 200 nodes. The decentralised infrastructure of the protocol that never forgets will gradually become as strong as to when will ever doubt its place as the most redundant digital storage medium of our ages.

II. Arweave Ecosystem

The clock is ticking, and Arweave in Asia closes in

everFinance wanted to remind us that the hottest offline event of the autumn is near and regales us with a bit of Arweave’s history. They can’t wait to see us, and we have to admit that the feeling is mutual. For many of the projects that will be present there, it will be the first time when they’ll meet face to face. There is a certain feeling after you worked with somebody remotely almost daily and you clicked almost instantly, it just makes you wonder how it will be to talk about Arweave – what brought you together from the beginning, in person. If you are in the vicinity and you can spare the time, just come by. For those of you who can’t be present there, don’t worry, we’ll get you covered, we’ll broadcast as much news as possible from the event.

Decent Land’s frenzy week

Usually, when an Arweave project makes an announcement about new developments, it gives us at least a week to digest the news before a new update. That’s definitely not the case with Decent Land. First, they announced the launch of a hackathon that aims to push the exploration further for what can be done with Ark protocol, ANS (Arweave Name Service), and ar.page. All three tools are developed by Decent Land as prerequisites to fulfill their grand vision.

Talking about Decent Land’s grand vision, here you have a taste of it. Their first official road map was just published, and believe us, it is not the usual road map you’ll find while scrolling through other Web3 projects. Here you will find the underlying details of what can be the software infrastructure for a myriad of Web3 social platforms. From a cross-chain identity layer to tools that will handle complex online societies – all is there. Much of the protocols and tools described in their roadmap are already being tested, so expect rather sooner than later for the new generation of truly decentralised social networks to arrive.

WeaveDB meets ArConnect

Some weeks ago, we covered in one of our Weekly Reports the appearance of WeaveDB. A product of AsteroidDAO, that’s basically a NoSQL database on top of Warp contracts. Now they integrated ArConnect with WeaveDB and showcased the general use of WeaveDB with a simple cross-chain demo dApp – The Wall v2, where you can authenticate with Metamask in the case of EVM chains, with Internet Computer wallet, or, evidently, with Arweave’s ArConnect.

Of course, I played with it a little bit, and I can definitely attest that the user experience is as clean, swift, and straightforward as possible. Most importantly – it is totally free for the end user, hinting at a future where casual Web2 users will interact with Web3 without the fear of being squeezed by their tokens at every click. The space will slowly mature and probably, in the mind of average users, Web3 will be characterised more by traits like immutability and personal sovereignty than by “line goes up” narratives.

The atomic NFT era rebooting

Atomic NFTs are not a new concept. Actually, any file stored on Arweave becomes an Atomic NFT. A true digital object. A single TX where you find the file, the metadata, and the token itself. The holy grail for an industry worth billions searched relentlessly on other chains, represents a mundane reality on Arweave. Until the rest of crypto will discover what every arweaver knows already, what are we doing? Well, we’re playing with the concept. @OnlyArweave started a little collection called BlockHead where you could stamp to mint one Atomic NFT. Stamping represents an action through which viewers can create proof of attention. The use cases of STAMPing are various, and certainly, you’ll see them implemented in the near future, for now, let’s return to our STAMPable PSTs.

After the above-mentioned collection concluded its minting period, img.arweave.dev came to life. A clean, simple dApp that lets everybody create their own STAMPable atomic asset. Here you have it, a tool with whom everybody can create an atomic NFT with embedded interactions, all executed in a way that seemed so effortless. Sometimes I wonder how many hours are dedicated by entire communities from other chains in Twitter Spaces to praise the innovation behind things that are technologically the same as they were years ago…while arweavers are casually releasing stuff like this.

Deep inside Tate’s mind

Last week was definitely Tate’s. CommunityLabs founder, the company responsible for Verto Exchange, Arweave’s 18 years wonder that managed to raise $30 million for his venture. The headlines were great, but what about the amount of work, the ethic, the things that he had to set aside in order to manage this type of result at such an early age? Answers about those and more can be found in the latest podcast released by @onlyArweave, where he managed to have a one-hour talk with Tate Berenbaum. III. Things you won’t encounter on Arweave

TL;DR: The Canadian establishment is trying to pass a bill that will offer vast powers to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), regarding which online content can be accessed by the Canadian people. Basically, they can filter online content based on any criteria and ban or label the content that they deem as unfit for Canadian consumers or push “Canadian” content that is considered desirable. If the bill passes, the state vouched that they will use it only to promote more Canadian content to the end users, but the lines between good intentions and gruesome outcomes could be so thin sometimes…

Now, we believe that it is obvious why you won’t encounter this kind of problem on Arweave. It’s not because Arweave lacks any kind of moderation – because there are tools on Arweave that can handle moderation, it’s because of the way Arweave has chosen to do it: the mechanics from the bill above, the moderation policy of Facebook, of Twitter, they all have in common the idea that a centralised entity should tell the users what content is best for them. As opposed to this, there is a strong chance of encountering totally different mechanics on Arweave native dApps. The moderation will happen at the user level, and one can choose what type of content they want to see on their feed. The tools that can enable such interactions are already there. The only thing that is needed is for governments to understand that if a citizen is good enough to be trusted with a rifle and sent to a battlefield to die for their values from time to time, it is good enough to have his own choices when it comes to what he wants to watch in the meantime.
